Subject: | What to get for an A4k? |
Hi,
I got an A4k a while ago, but I find that it is sooooo slow it's
unbelievable.
It's got a A3640 V3.1 68040-25 processor (but it's an LC, i.e. no
FPU), 2+16 RAM, PicassoIV Gfx card, DataFlyer 4000SX SCSI card, 24x
SCSI CD drive, 1GB SCSI HD, 540MB IDE drive.
The machine boots from the IDE drive, and takes quite a while to boot.
I was thinking of spending a little bit of money on it to make it
more useable, but I am not too sure whats up.
Should I get a faster hard disk? Buffered IDE interface? Perhaps get
PFS3?
Perhaps switch from the IDE interface to the SCSI card? However I
dunno how to get it to autoboot? Or if you can! Anyone got an A4000D
with an autobooting DataFlyer 4000SX?
Will getting a full 040 CPU (i.e. one with FPU) will give a big
performance boost?
Is it easy to modify the A3640 v3.1 to take a faster 040 CPU? i.e.
just add the chip, and a new crystal? What speed 040's are there?
Cyberstorm 060's and Cyberstorm PPC's are a bit TOO expensive, even
second hand :(
Suggestions anyone?
Later
Alex
